General Site Activities.

Uneven ground, broken glass, overgrown areas, slips, trips and falls.

P.P.E to be worn at all times. Site to be kept tidy/free from obstructions where possible. When cables are routed in access areas ensure they are kept to the sides or routed overhead or underground and secured. Cable lengths must be kept to a minimum. Operatives must visually inspect all cables and sockets for damage before use. Avoid trailing through water to avoid risk of damage from plant etc. Cables must not be routed across traffic routes. All electrical extension cables must be subject to a planned maintenance programme and inspected periodically with records maintained.

Material Handling.

Employees

Back strain, bodily injury.

All personnel will be trained in safe manual handling techniques, large or heavy loads will be lifted or moved with mechanical equipment, fork lift trucks/cranes/hoists. Where this is not available assistance will be provided. Wherever possible large loads will be split into smaller loads and safe routes planned and established before work begins. Work to be pre-fabricated as far reasonably practicable.

Use Of Hand Tools.

Employees

Personal injury.

Tool to be suitable for the purpose intended and maintained in good working order. Tools to be inspected regularly in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Open blade knives must be kept in protective sheaths unless in use. Screwdrivers and other sharp tools are to be used in the correct manner so as not to cause injury. All operatives to be given instructions in the safe use of hand tools as part of their skill training. Tools which may deteriorate are to be checked on a regular basis and maintained or replaced as necessary.

 

 

Eye injuries.

Suitable eye protection to be provided and must be worn whenever there is a risk of flying particles.

Supervisor to monitor the use of all hand tools and to make specific checks for chisels with mushroom heads, hammer heads for security, files for loose handles and exposed tangs, open ended spanners for splayed jaws, and all other indications of wear and tear.

Use Of Portable Electrical Equipment.

Personal injuries, electrocution, shock, burns, fire, explosion.

Equipment selected to be suitable for purpose and only operated by nominated competent personnel. All equipment to be 110v if 240v to be used with a R.C.D. The R.C.D to be tested at start of works and by a competent engineer every 12 months. All equipment must be double insulated. All equipment to be PAT every 12 months. Visual inspection before use by operator. All cables to be fitted with enclosed sockets.

Use Of Equipment With Moving Parts.

Employees

Eye, hand injuries, abrasions, cuts.

When using equipment with moving parts such as drills, circular saws etc, loose clothing should be removed and hair tied back to prevent entanglement. All equipment must be guarded and used in compliance with manufacturers instructions.

Use Of Plant.

Personal injury.

All operators using cartridge tools are to be trained and certificated by their supplier. Abrasive wheel changing to be carried out only by a trained competent person. Site machinery i.e. fork lift trucks, dumpers, hoists etc to be operated only by fully trained and certificated operatives.

Noise Assessment.

Personal injury.

Consideration to be given when using machinery and cutting equipment to ensure other operatives and bystanders are not affected by the noise from the operations.

Operation Of Heavy Plant.

Collision damage

Only to be carried out by CITB certified operators. Banks man to be present at all times.

Excavations

Employees

Injury from collapse of excavation.

No work to be carried out in unsupported excavations deeper than 1.2 metres. Excavations to be shored as per BS regulations or battered to suit. Daily inspection by competent person before work commences.

Open Excavations.

Protective barriers to be erected and maintained, hazard warning signs displayed.

 

Employees / Public

Falling Into Excavations.

Adequate fencing and warning signs to be provided around all excavations. Access to and from excavations must be made only by secured ladders.

Damage To Underground Services.

Underground services to be located prior to excavation. (CAT scan or trial hand dig)

Tipping / high boom operations

Collision damage / electrocution

Overhead hazards to be protected by frameworks or highlighted with high visibility lagging.
